There are a few interesting threads over at the Gardenweb forums about purchasing big ticket items from big box stores (Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, etc.). I am a major proponent of buying from a local dealer whenever possible. However, I understand that purchasing from a local independent is not always possible. Nor is it always the best decision.
These threads at Gardenweb detail several members experiences with Sears, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Some of the anecdotes are good, while others are (very) bad.
It used to be every community had at least a couple tv & appliance dealers. These dealers had been in the community for years, and they serviced what they sold. They are a dying breed, and more and more of these dealers are closing up shop in the face of fierce competition from these national chains. Add to that the downturn in the economy, and it is clear the loss of these independently owned businesses will only accelerate.
So what say you? Have you prchased from the national chains or the smaller, local guys? What hve been your experiences? Leave a comment and let's discuss!
