Update on Oasis/Cabrio f51 error codes

Posted by Brad Monday, June 25, 2007

I continue to see more and more searches every day in reference to the f51 error codes on the Oasis and Cabrio machines. I've done a bit more looking (amazing how Google, Ask, and Yahoo can give such different results at the top), and have found several more references to the f51 codes. I'm guessing these errors are costing Sears and Whirlpool a LOT of money in warranty service.

The most common fix is to replace the speed sensor and the control board. I read a post at another site that indicated tests should be conducted to determine exactly which parts need to be replaced. However, it appears as if many servicers are taking the shotgun approach and just replacing both.

For the 27082, it looks like those components are part numbers 8565188A (speed sensor) and W10112113A (control board). Those parts will apply to other models, but not likely to all.

Do you own a Kenmore or Oasis or Whirlpool Cabrio? I would love to hear from you. Which model do you have? What do you like or dislike about them? Have you had any troubles?

Shoot me an email at brad at theworldofwashers.com.

  2. Love the machine, but at our house, we, too, were plagued by the infamous "F-51" error code. Not wanting to pay for a service call that probably wouldn't even resolve the issue (as I'd read in other blogs), we were having to run back to the machine several times to hit "Stop / Start" to finally get through many a load. Believe it or not, we went through this for several months, until the procedure ceased to work anymore.

At this point I had to get brave and open up the machine. It took only the removal of 3 screws to gain access to the control panel, where I unplugged, reseated, and wiggled every connection several times. Then I tilted the machine forward onto its face to get access to the open bottom. It took only the removal of one allen-head screw to remove the motor cover, then four bolts to remove the part of the motor that has all the coils. This gave access to two electrical connectors, one of which was the motor position sensor. I repeated the unplugging / replugging / wiggling procedure on both connections, then put things back together. And guess what? We haven't had a single re-occurrence of F51, or any other "F", ever since!

My guess is that it was re-seating the motor position sensor connection that did the trick. If you decide to give it a try, just remember to make sure you unplug your machine first, and avoid touching any circuit boards (don't want to zap any components with static electricity, y'know)!

  4. I, too am an F51 club member. I was so irritated by Whirlpool's initial lack of response and apparent unwilliness to confess to the problem, that I've started my own blog specific to this issue. http://cabriof51error.blogspot.com

  6. I have been plagued with the F51 error with the Cabrio machine. The service technician came out to supposedly fix the washer by levelling it out and reconnecting some loose connections. However within 5 minutes of him leaving and using the washer, the dreaded F51 error was back. I re-contacted the service guy who said the motor sensor needs to be replaced. The joke of it all is that the washer is 7 months old. I have used washers for years in the past with zero issues....I'll never buy another Whirhlpool....

  8. Well.. my Cabrio washing machine has been in my house for less than 24 hours. We have the F51 error. I googled it after I couldnt get hold of anyone at the 800 number because of the time.

I wish I would have known about this before hand. Will get the service guy out today and see what happens.......

  10. I bought my $1014 Oasis in 2006 and as soon as one year went by the f51 code began appearing. It steadily got worse and today (May 10,08)I am going to take the MPS off and try cleaning it per instructions from this blog site. The worse part of all of this is I am constantly in the dog house over this piece of crap. Thanks for the input from all of my fellow Oasis sufferers. The video on how to take the piece of junk apart is a great help too (found on this site). I wrote Consumer Reports about this problem and reference this site. Hope that is OK with..well anyone. Later, Dog House Mike

  14. After one year my Whirlpool Calypso washer started the infamous ERROR 51. I didn't replace anything. The problem is a poorly designed China wiring harness from the motor position sensor to the main board. Take apart the motor and access the main circuit board. Clean all contacts with WD40 and reposition the connectors back on the boards....it now works perfectly. Moisture gets into the connectors and contact with the circuit board is lost. The Sears Oasis and other error codes may be caused by the same problem.
The entire inside if these washers are made in other countries. Why can't they make the parts in America?
    GREED!

  16. Unfortunately, we are also having the same issue with a Sears Oasis. Service is going to come out on Friday and I am getting the extended warranty today. I generally don't do extended warranties but the machine is only 3mos old. Not a good sign... Thanks for the blog, it was helpful. You can cut to the chase much faster with the call centers when you can tell them in detail what is going on.

  18. I have the Whirlpool Cabrio (crap) washer as well and I’m getting the same F51 error code on certain wash settings. It basically stops during the rinse cycle and I have to power it off (then all the water drains automatically). Once I power it back on, I then set it for a Quick Wash to complete.

I’ve had a technician out 3 times and they’ve replaced the computer board on it and it still does the same thing. I can use the Quick Wash setting and I don’t have that problem, but any other setting, the F51 error codes comes on during the rinse cycle.

Of course this only start happening about a month after my 1 year warranty expired. Still working on a solution to get this resolved. The technician is coming back out again today…sigh!

  20. I too have the f51 problem. I had a technician come out and he cleaned the connectors that he thought were causing the "RPS failure." He said if the problem came back they would have to replace the ETC board. I called Whirlpool back today and they said usually they will extend a warranty 6 month, but of course I am just outside of that. The customer service rep offered to pay for the part but I would have to pay for the labor, $173. Plus, I already paid $70 for them to come out here the first time. I spoke with a manager and she (sheeba) agreed to pay for parts and labor. She would not credit me for the $70 I already spent. We will see if this fixes things. Looks like it has not worked for others. If this does not work I am going to contact the attorney that did the class action lawsuit for the Callypso machine and see if they want to do one for Cabrio. Stay tuned.

  22. We just started getting error F51 every wash cycle our 2-year-old Cabrio washer a few weeks ago. After finding all these sites describing the same problem, I called Whirlpool. They told me my washer would need service and since there is no recall, I would have to pay. I told them that the internet is full of complaints about this error and that it is their responsibility, blah blah. She put me on hold for 15 minutes and then said she had asked and this is something they will pay for. I guess their policy must be something like "only nice accepting people have to pay." Anyway the repair person came today and said the part has to be ordered so I'm looking up the closest laundromat. I'll post back and let you know if it gets fixed. Thanks for your posts!

  25. I too am having problems with this machine and beeping. I have yet to see a F51 code, but the lights on the cyle soil level keep flashing down the line and it continuously beeps. My husband and I are about to pay to have the extended warranty, but after reading so many people having the same problem return I am afraid to waste the money. Does anyone have any advice on whether to spend the money to have them come and fix it or should we just spend our money on an "old fashioned" washer? Does anyone know if the recall has actually been done on the user interface yet? Please help!! My email address is lilly-101@cotc.edu Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to respond!

Hopefully no more problems. amazing warranty almost up and the machine is breaking!

  35. I've had horrible problems with our Whirlpool Cabrio Washer starting at age 10 months with its control pannel and numerous leaks......
I'd throw this thing out the window if I could lift it. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS MACHINE! IT IS HORRIBLE. We purcased ours at Best Buy with the service plan, and although all service and parts have been paid for, it is a TOTAL PAIN and TAKES FOREVER to get parts in (lovely). I've spent hours and hours dealing with this issue, and the service plan people from Best Buy are kind enough, but they can't do anything for me. They said that they will declare it a lemon after three problems... Now, since the first problem was fixed under the 12 month Whirlpool warenty (not the Best Buy post 12 month) I'm dealing with issues. Uggg. JUST DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE.

After I mentioned this errorcode, they were very helpful and told me that while there was no official recall that they would take care of this problem free of charge. I purchased my washer in October 2006 and had this problem and a tech out within 30 days of the purchase. The direct number for the cabrio recall is 866-769-7260. Just be nice to them and I am sure they will take care of the problem. Wish I had googled this a year ago!

Without denigrating any manufacturer's product that is displayed on the sales floor, I have done my best to steer people clear of these machines. For a long time, because of vibration issues, Cabrios were recommended for second floor installation. The only other reason to purchase these machines were there large capacity (4.5 cf). With the advent of larger FL machines (Electrolux at 4.7 and LGs at 4.5 cf), hopefully nobody will ever purchase one of these nightmares.

I was very pleasant to the rep and told him how I read about lots of other people experiencing the same F51 error code. He set up an appointment with a Whirlpool service technician and said that Whirlpool will cover the labor and parts. He said that anyone experiencing this problem should call Whirlpool and they are aware of it and will take care of it. Time will tell if the machine actually gets repaired.

I work on appliances and the problem is actually with the design of the motor position sensor. vibration actually pulls it loose. they have now redesigned the sensor to stay in better. it involves changing the wiring harness and plug both. but once that's done you shouldn't have anymore problems.

Doing one load of laundry means standing in my kitchen from about 33 until 26 minutes in the cycle and hitting cancel and start about a dozen times and then from about 14 until 10 minutes doing the same thing.
The worst part is I BOUGHT THE WARRANTY! I have been given the run around by everyone I have called saying they can't seems to find my paperwork. Fortunately I have everything and plan to march down to the store where I purchased this POS and make them do something. Rest assured I will be taking all of these complaints with me.

  71. My Oasis Elite error codes began one week -after- the warranty had expired. I agree with Baxter's analysis. I found my failures were caused by the very cheap connector on the motor position sensor (MPS). This connector should never be on a washing machine as it can not take the vibration without failure over time. The "mating" connector is a bifricated (2 contacts areas for each one electrical contact) but the printed circuit board has only ONE contact area mating area. Cheap, cheap design. Besides cleaning the contacts, I added a contact "enhancer" called "DeoxIT" which will extend the life of the contact and lower the resistance. How long it will last under these harsh "vibration" conditions, is any body's guess. But this contact conditioner has a proven record and in use by technicians in the repair business. DeoxIT may be found at your local Radio Shack. Its not cheap. Only a very small amount is needed. I have no more "F51" errors and saved a lot of money for about 45 minutes worth of work. Thanks again, Mr Baxter!

  99. ^^update - I think maybe I fixed mine too. here's how:

tip the washer forward , taking care not to let the glass top(if it has it) flop around too much.

On the bottom of the tub, you'll see a pie plate sized white round thing with a single allen bolt right in the middle of it. Grab yourself an allen wrench and start loosening it up. You don't need to remove the back of the washer, and mine had nothing on the bottom. Everything's right there for ya.

While you're loosening this bolt, you're also removing the big outer cover..if the bolt starts tightening up, it means the cover is cocked to one side or teh other and in a bind. All you have to do is tighten the bolt about a quarter turn, wiggle the cover, and then resume loosening. Don't force it.

Once that's off, you need to remove the coil assembly. There are 4 10mm bolts right in the center, right around the splined shaft. Remove them. When you go to remove the last one, steady the coil assembly so it doesn't flop off and hang by the flimsy wires.

on the back of the coil assembly there are two electrical connectors. One is tiny and black, the other is large and white and looks like an upper case "E".

I removed both of these..they take a little wiggling back and forth, especially the big white one..don't go all out, they both seem really flimsy and somewhat delicate. Once you got em off just clean the connections with aforementioned contact cleaner.

Put it all back together, and voila. We got through an entire laundry cycle with no F51, when before doing this we couldn't get through 2 loads. Hopefully it "takes" somewhat permanently.

They typically send out the sears techs for the local area (Guys that get contracted by sears to do repairs/etc) I was told. Anyway, they scheduled the repair for 5 days out (including counting the 2 weekend days) for a 4hr block of time. Told me there would be no paperwork and no bill to pay. Sounds like they know there's a problem, even though there is no recall. Guess can't complain tooo much

  110. My wife and I purchased our Cabrio set about 5-6 years ago. We had another set of Whirlpool's we had purchased from an Army PX in Georgia which ran fine-actually GREAT for many years and we really had no reason to purchase this set other than we were wanting to be more "environmentally correct"-Big mistake-actually HUGE MISTAKE!

I have hated this washer since the day I brought it home. Pants are always wrinkled when I remove them from the dryer. The unit makes my laundry room stink and now this error F51 code. But I called Whirlpool and after a 25 minute wait on hold, they are sending out a service technician to repair it for FREE! They are suppose to be here on Monday. I'll keep you posted...

  112. OMG...I bought the Cabrio set April 2007...constantly got the "F" code,
couldn't even get through one load of wash. Repair people out x 3...no
help..Fortunately, I was able to return to the store and get something that worked...Maytag, front loader...PERFECT!! Not one iota of a problem
    since June of 2007..
I was ready to junk the machine if I couldn't return it...I've never seen
or heard of such a horrible engineering design and NO ONE would do anything about it!! Funny, Consumer Reports rates the machine as one of the best! What a huge joke that is..they apparently never actually used the machine!

  114. I agree that this washer doesn't wash. heaven forbid my son has dirt on his clothes. We end up soaking/scrubbing the clothes in detergent in the sink then putting them in the washer. Last night I started to hear load noises like bearings or something when the washer seemed to be changing gears. There was no error sign-- at least I never saw one. Any thoughts? I don't think that we bought an extended warranty. Its now 3+ yrs old. Again- I hate this washer. each wash takes sooooo long.

  118. Thank you to those who posted suggestions on the F-51 code on the Cabrio washer. Followed the posted directions on how to pop the top. Found two articles of clothing that spun out of the tub and down the side, jamming the tub and not allowing it to spin. Removed the two pieces of clothing (Be careful, outside of tub has sharp edges), put the top back on and working well now without any error codes. Be very careful loading the machine and don't overload!

  120. I got an F code, but it is not what you folks are getting. My display is F with no numbers. I have had my Cabrio for 4 years with no problems. I pulled it out from the wall and replaced it with my 10 year old Kenmore Calypso. The Kenmore worked for 3 days and now has a failed pump. Found a class-action suit involving the Kenmore expired in 2007. Two washers failing in 3 days! I'm buying a Maytag today! At least they offer a 10year warranty on the motor. I have 3 active boys and wash a load or two everyday. Back off of my rant... anybody know what F only means? I cannot locate this.

  124. Had the same problem, F-51 and Sd code at the same time. Fished out a complete outfit for my wife from the inner tub. Totally amazed at how an adult T-shirt and shorts can make it thru the inner tub? Really shocked at the low quality of the circuit boards as well, amazing amount of over-spray on the electrical contacts for the motor sensor. This blog saved me a call to the repairman. I have already replaced-repaired the drain pump housing twice because of a quarter caught in the pump. I am very dismayed by the lack of engineering foresight in this washer. My Dad finally retired his 45 year old snowblower, he lives in northern NY where it snows 5 months out of the year. What happened to American pride and quality?

  126. Our machine is only 2 years old and we had the F-51 code and could also hear coins when the machine was spinning. 3 weeks ago, we tilted the machine forward to remove the allen-head screw, it was already loose! Went ahead and removed it, wiggled, unplugged and replaced. It has been working perfectly every since. We also had coins in the drain motor. It was very simple to disconnect the hose, reached in and felt money, poured it out. It worked great for a few more days until more money founds its way again into the motor. Simply tilted the machine forward and disconnected and dumped the coins out again. Didn't have to remove the bottom either.Only took 5 minutes to fix. Luckily the repair man was running late and I could cancel the appointment and fix it ourselves! Good luck everyone!

  127. We do repairs on appliances and have often suggested our customers purchase whirlpool, but this is one machine our techs have always steered clear of. Just from a tech stand point, we knew he design was flawed immediately. Although it is poorly manufactured and a service nightmare, Whirlpool still makes other machines that are great and last a long time. Their duet's, excluding the sport model, are great. I think we find that every major manufacturer has flops now and then. The Maytag Neptune was probably what put them out of business. This site is very helpful and all of us, including repairmen, are happy it is here. Sorry to all of you for the headache, and hopefully the other repairmen aren't gouging your wallets with these repairs. Good luck!

  129. "crazy christensen family" are you in the NJ area? Had the f51 error and called Whirlpool and they sent out a technician. Repairman said that I would have to pay for the repair as the problem was caused by water in the sensor and that the contract does not cover any type of flooding(?). The repair cost is the price of a new machine. Help!

  131. we have had a cabrio washer since 07 just called whirpool number I got from this Web site,VERY HELPFULL.Service call set up for the F1 error code and the cusotmer service said that my model was covered. Thanks to all that posted their nightmares.

  132. We purchased our washer along with other Whirlpool/Kitchen Aid products. Shortly, after 12 months we began to have problems with all three. Today, it is our fourth call for servicing on our Cabrio Washer F51 Flu, second time this year. It is an epidemic which Whirlpool has stated numerous times, "They are unaware of any problem with this model & the F51 code". I live in Illinois. We use a service repair company which is recommended by Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid and all other manufactures. They have stated, this is a common problem which is reoccurring with the Cabrio washer and Whirlpool will not authorize on their dime to fix the actual problem. The actual problem is not the control board W10112113A & speed sensor 8565188A. But on many units it is in addition to the primary cause being a loose bolt under the tub. Tightening the bolt is a temporary fix since the tubing and the bolt itself are usually striped. What is needed to fix the problem which others have posted are the Rotor 280146 & Outer Tube W10193886, estimate cost over $600.00.

Todays service call was suppose to be on Whirlpool's dime after calling them with a complaint and the numerous blogs I read regarding the Cabrio Flu F51. I called the recommended number 1-866-698-2538 list on some blogs which others found to be helpful getting servicing, parts & labor on Whirlpool dime approved to fix once and fall all the washer & the F51 code.

After he arrived, I had their service man speak to them regarding what is needed. Whirlpool stated to me, they will cover all cost for repair, servicing and labor. Only when the service man arrived he was told to replaced the circuit board with one (not the correct one for my F51 code ) but the one for a F1 code. Yes, you would think it would be one of the same, but its not. The new board which would have been put into my unit if I had an unethical Technician, would prevent the F51 code. This is what Whirlpool told him to do. He stated, the problem is actually replacing the two parts mentioned above, but Whirlpool, even thou told me 3 days prior would pick up all parts and labor to fix my unit at no charge to me, declined to cover the needed parts & repair. I called Whirlpool that day and spoke to their customer service rep (1-866-698-2538). This Whirlpool representative agreed the Rotor & Outer Tube should be covered based on what was agreed. His Supervisor Sue #3798 out of Michigan, said "No" & apologized for our problem we are having with the washer & Whirlpool did us a favor since the washer is now out of warranty. Once again (Sue-employee #3798) stated "they don't see a problem nor a need for a recall since this is not a manufacturing problem.

Whirlpool made a washer "Calypso" which many service repair companies will not offer extended warranties on and recommend buying a new washer. Whirlpool settled a multi million dollar class action lawsuit on the Calypso due to similar experience customers are having with Whirlpool over the F51 code. Whirlpool failed to admit to a substandard product & did not stand behind their product, causing consumers like us hundreds, if not thousands of dollars for purchasing, service & parts trying to fix the problem. I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND ANY WHIRLPOOL, KITCHEN AID, MAYTAG PRODUCT TO ANY CONSUMER....THEY ARE ONE OF THE SAME!!! Unfortunately, I think Whirlpool needs another class action lawsuit, since they are not an ethical or reparable company making quality products nor stands behind their product & servicing. Ask your service men in your area, regarding the Calypso & the Cabrio F51 codes. Make sure the part being put into your washer to fix the problem is the correct part.

  134. Called 866.698.2538 as directed on this blog. Whirlpool promptly scheduled a service tech out to troubleshoot and correct the problem. It sounds like Whirlpool has initiated a recall for this issue which indicates it should be fixed free of charge. While not totally solved, it sounds like I got traction on the issue without spending $400 as some of the horror stories indicated. Thanks!-Watertown, WI

  136. URGH! My machine is 1 year, 1 month and 1 day old and I am a victim of the blasted F51 code. Called the 866.698.2538 number this morning. I was told by a service rep that my particular model number and serial number has not had a history of these issues and therefore would not be covered. I then asked to speak to a manager. I informed her of all that I have been reading online, and how my machine (ie model and serial combination) might be new, but this problem has been going on for awhile with the Cabrios. I informed her that I wish I would have known to look for this before I bought my washer! She very nicely agreed to pay for parts and service stating the reason because I was so close to the end of my 1 year warranty.
Thank you so much whoever started this blog! It has helped!
Now what to do in the future? Do I spend more money on this machine and buy the extended warranty? OR just start saving for a new NON WHIRLPOOL machine?? Any one with more years in want to comment on that one??

  138. Out of the warranty period, my washer showed error 51. Eventually, after searching for solutions, I found out that replacing the control board would solve the problem.
I replaced the control board and solved the problem for about 2 months. Now it started to fail again with the same error code 51.
Could any of you tell me what parts were replaced to repair your washer problem?

  141. We bought a cabrio just over a year ago because our genius local repair man siad they were the best out there. The first one lasted 2 days. My wife snapped and our appliance store had a new one to her that day, the front load we had for 2 years had crashed already so they were already afraid of her. We got the f51 code called the same genius who told us to buy it and he had no idea what could be wrong "look it up on the net he told us". We ordered the wire harness and all the crap and replaced it all, still didn't work. Got onto this site and went with the cleaning of the conectors and it is running now. Will see how long it lasts. Anyone who can fix appliances and is looking for a job you can make a killing in NE SK. There are 2 here and one couldn't find the sharp end of a stick and I'm not sure if the other one exsists. We have called there many times over a few years but they never call back.
This machine does wrinkle everything, balls up sheets and stinks.
Does anyone know what a good machine is

  145. Got a cabrio set as a gift/inheritance, washer WTW6400SW2 had F51 and oL faults. To fix the F51 fault, I did as previously explained, removed the control panel, cleaned all of the connectors at the circuit board and applied electrical contact grease to ensure a proper closed circuit. I also removed the motor underneath, also cleaning all connections and applying electrical contact grease. This fixed the F51 fault.

For the oL fault (trips overload fault even with no clothes inside), it's described here in detail. http://www.justanswer.com/appliance/5j67a-whirlpool-cabrio-washer-giving-ol-code-tried.html The wash basket needs to slide up and down the motor shaft in order to engage/disengage the agitator properly. There was 'rust buildup' on the shaft, causing it to 'stick'. I removed the basket, cleaned the shaft and bin bearings with sandpaper, put a light layer of WD40, and reinstalled. Works great.

Here's a complete teardown video I found. Obviously, only disassemble as needed. Thanks Bloggers for your help!!!

Note: I did everything with the washer still upright, and water lines still connected. Woo!!

  149. I have a Kenmore Elite and lo and behold F51 showed up. The washer is about 6 yrs old and heavily used. The link to the parts dept of Sears is http://www.searspartsdirect.com then add the model number a decent exploded view of the parts will show up. After calling a non Sears repair service and having them replace the Sensor (tub position sensor I think it is) It helped but did not completely fix the problem. I then replaced the hub because its inexpensive and easy and seemed a little loose. This also helped but did not completely fix the problem. I then followed the procedure as described above, got the DeoxiT and proceeded to disembowel the machine and I found.
    1. The sensor was not properly seated.
    2. There is a large center nut on the bottom of the tub that was loose, this is not shown on the parts diagram.
After reseating the sensor, and tightening the large nut (32mm) and applying the contact cleaner it now works properly.

comment: this machine is mechanically pretty simple, it is not as intimidating as I was lead to believe, it does not take a mechanical genesis to do these repairs.

Again a reminder, have a support of some kind, small table top, board, 4x4 and a rag ready to support the stator because the wires will not allow hanging it from them.

This website is wonderful by the way.
